ISLAMABAD – Schools in garrison town of Rawalpindi will observe ‘Black Day’ on Thursday to mark the anniversary of the May 9 riots that occurred last year.
Pakistan saw unprecedented riots last year after the arrest of ex-PM Imran Khan as hundreds of leaders and supporters of his party took to the streets and even stormed key government buildings and military installations.
In this regard, the Rawalpindi district administration issued a notification abut observance of Black Day on Thursday, with ceremonies planned in all educational institutions.
Students and other attendees will remain in the assembly hall during the ceremony to pay tribute to martyrs.
ISPR on May 9 Riots
On Tuesday, Director General Inter-Services Public Relations (DG ISPR) Major General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry emphasized the need to punish those responsible for the May 9 riots, stating that it is crucial for upholding the judicial system and restoring public faith.
Army spokesperson noted that the riots were not just a matter concerning the Pakistan Army but the entire nation, expressing concern over individuals being influenced against the armed forces and political leaders inciting violence.
He said these riots were sparked by the arrest of the deposed prime minister in a corruption case, leading to widespread clashes and violence as alleged PTI supporters protested the arrest.
